The ones you can control include how you look after yourself. Do you stay well hydrated? Are you eating good quality foods, with daily protein and lots of different coloured vegetables? Do you move your body every day & raise your heart rate? Are you doing something productive with your days and counting your blessings? All contribute to your emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing.

What people going through menopause really need, many say, is to eliminate the stigma around this stage of life so that the symptoms can be discussed openly and taken seriously.

10 Things No One Ever Tells You about Menopause

There was one book that was detailed and helpful and that was Miriam Stoppards Menopause: The Complete Guide to Maintaining Health and Well-being and Managing Your Life. It was, at the time, and in the bookshops I was looking in , the only one that seemed based on real experience, was written by a female doctor who had clearly been there, and was evidenced-based. Ive just looked up the latest edition, and it is better than ever and I would recommend it whole heartedly. It gave me a context to see my own symptoms in, was clear about where possible therapies were evidence-based and where they were not, and was accessibly and confidently written.

Im also now aware of work being done by the Health Experiences Research Group which has produced much of the material for the healthtalk site, which includes films of women talking about their experience of menopause. Jenny Hislop, who worked on this project, has written about this in her Evidently Cochrane blog Lets talk about the menopause. You can also find the healthtalk section on Menopause here and its terrific. If only I had been able to access it, it would have saved me a lot of worry and uncertainty, and stopped me thinking that I had become a wild, emotionally unstable woman for ever!

YOUR VAGINA AND VULVA MAY CHANGE

Estrogen contributes to the development of female sex traits like breasts and uterine lining, along with regulation of certain bodily functions like menstruation and sleep. During menopause, estrogen levels decrease, which can lead to a common condition called genitourinary syndrome of menopause . Women with GSM experience a range of uncomfortable symptoms in the vulva and vagina, as well as issues with the urethra, bladder and labia.

Without estrogen, the walls of the vagina become thin and dry, says Dr. Mintah. This can cause pain during sex by making the vagina more prone to irritation and tiny tears. You may also develop itching, burning and dryness in your vulva and vagina.

They’re not all bad what women need to know beyond hot flashes

Signs of menopause can begin 10 years before a woman is officially in this phase of her life, defined as a full year without a menstrual period. For most women in the U.S., this occurs around age 51 and signals a shift from the reproductive phase to the post-reproductive phase of life.

Hot flashes and night sweats are well known signs of menopause, but other lesser known issues can also crop up. Understanding why and what is happening can help make the transition easier. Here are seven things no one ever tells you :

1. Anxiety could increase. If you find yourself suddenly worried and anxious over seemingly nothing, hot flashes may be to blame. During a hot flash, the body releases a surge of a chemical called adrenaline, which makes arteries contract, says Dr. Philip Sarrel, emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine. This can make you feel anxious its unnerving, although its not harmful, he notes.

Another bonus: exercise may also help ease hot flashes for 24 hours afterward.

5. You may become depressed. Changes in brain chemistry that accompany menopause can induce depression, says Sarrel. Some women can even become suicidal, he notes. Mood swings from changes in hormones can trigger laughing one minute and crying the next, or feeling depressed.

You Should Seek Out A Specialist

Your body experiences so many changes during this time, so its a good idea to see a health professional with expertise in the field. Getting a recommendation from a friend or family member is always an option, or you can use The North American Menopause Societys database to find certified menopause practitioners near you. These providers require recertification every three years, so you can feel confident theyre up-to-date on the latest research and treatments.

And make sure you feel comfortable talking to the provider you pick. If theres one broad-stroke message Rebecca C. If you asked anyone on the street to name one menopause symptom I would bet that the vast majority would say hot flashes. But the thing about hot flashes is that they sound like a minor side effect while in actual fact they can be, for some people, quite distressing.

In my experience a full-on hot flash can affect your entire body, bring you out in a sticky sweat, distract you from whatever you were doing and send you heading for fresh air or the nearest fridge.

A Rise In Bad Cholesterol

Menopause can cause your bad cholesterol to rise. It is due to the increasing age as well as the hormonal changes associated with menopause, especially the decrease in estrogen.

A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein peaked during late peri- and early post-menopause, while changes in the early stages of menopause were minimal.

Another study in 2015 by the North American Menopause Society reports that menopause diminishes the impact of good cholesterol, thus making women more vulnerable to artery hardening during menopause.

A womans transition through menopause leads to an increase in good cholesterol, which surprisingly was actually associated with greater plaque buildup. This suggests the quality of HDL good cholesterol may get altered over the menopausal transition.

However, a healthy lifestyle can prevent these fluctuations in cholesterol levels. Make sure to get plenty of exercises and eat a heart-healthy diet.

Hrt Is Not Obligatory

Many women quite rightly see the menopause as a natural stage of life, not an illness or condition. Some women are lucky enough to sail through that stage with few or no symptoms and can manage with no assistance.

Other women do have symptoms but would prefer to manage them with alternative remedies.

Angie McKaig calls it peri brain out loud, in meetings. Thats when the 49-year-old has moments of perimenopause-related brain fog so intense that she will forget the point she is trying to make in the middle of a sentence. Sometimes it will happen when shes presenting to her colleagues in digital marketing at Canadas largest bank in Toronto. But it can happen anywhere she has forgotten her own address. Twice.

Ms. McKaigs symptoms were a rude surprise when she first started experiencing them in 2018, right around when her mother died. She had an irregular period, hot flashes, insomnia and massive hair loss along with memory issues she describes as like somebody had taken my brain and done the Etch A Sketch thing, which is to say, shaken it until it was blank.

Ms. McKaig is aggressively transparent about her peri brain at work, because she realized how few people actually talk about this, and how little information we are given. So I have tried to normalize it, she said.

How I Beat Menopausal Fatigue

Every time I went to bed, I suffered from heart palpitations these were really scary for me as I have always been fit and healthy with loads of energy.

I was certain the heart palpitations and feelings of panic were caused by due excess weight gain that occurred during menopause. I decided I needed to make some lifestyle changes, and Ive listed the things I tried to fight menopausal tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamins for menopause fatigue

The first thing I tried to combat perimenopause fatigue was vitamin supplements and herbal remedies

  • Black Cosh: this helped slightly with the extreme hot sweats, but was not an effective menopause fatigue treatment. There has been more than one study to show Black Cosh to have worrying side effects, so I decided to stop taking it.
  • Starflower: I found absolutely no relief to any of my menopause symptoms or extreme menopause fatigue after taking starflower.
  • Magnesium: taking magnesium did help me to sleep slightly better but not so significantly that it cured my hot sweats and tiredness.
  • Sage: I found this to be no help with perimenopause fatigue or post-menopause fatigue.
  • CBD oil: taking CBD oil helped with menopause aches and pains. However, it didnt help with exhaustion, and it was very costly, so I decided it wasnt worth the cost.

Sadly, none of the natural menopause fatigue remedies worked for me, however, I do know many women who find the natural supplements work very well for them.
