My husband, David, and most of the men who responded to my recent questionnaire were completely in the dark about what to expect when the loves of their lives hit perimenopause and menopause. Boy, talk about being “blindsided”!

When our relationship was hit with a torrent of hot flashes, tremendous mood swings and sleepless and sexless nights, he was more than flummoxed.

Why was I so moody? Why did everything he do upset me so? Why didn’t I want to be intimate with him anymore? These changes can be so confusing to the men in our lives. My husband wasn’t sure if my feelings for him had changed or if he had done something to incite my bitchy demeanor. Either way, he feared it would never go away. He wanted our relationship back, but had no idea as to what the cause or cure was.

For him and for most of the men I interviewed, dealing with and trying to understand perimenopause and menopause is more challenging than PMS. “It doesn’t come and go every 28 days or so… once you’re in, there’s no turning back, so you can’t rationalize away the symptoms,” David says. “You can’t just dismiss the symptoms of menopause as ‘it’s just that time of month’ and wait for day eight to roll around.”

As your hormone levels change, you may find yourself more irritable, anxious, sad or forgetful than usual. Your sex drive can also decrease or increase.

These changes are very typical as your body approaches menopause. So, be kind to yourself, practice self-care and ask for help if youre having trouble.

Sleeping problems

You may find it difficult to get to sleep, or you may wake up in the middle of the night. Sleep trouble can contribute to a constant feeling of tiredness, which can make you moodier.

What You Need To Know About Menopause

More awareness, education needed to help prevent women with severe symptoms from suffering needlessly, say experts.

Up to a quarter of menopausal women experience severe physical and mental health symptoms, but common misconceptions about menopause often prevent women from getting effective treatment, according to U of A experts.

Hot flashes, mood swings, “brain fog,” joint pain, insomnia and weight gain.

Most women in their late 40s and 50s will immediately recognize the symptoms of menopause. While up to 80 per cent of menopausal women will experience some symptoms, up to 25 per cent will suffer enough to seek medical relief.

And yet, not only are far too many women not prepared for “the change of life” when it comes, say experts in mature women’s health, widespread ignorance is causing unnecessary harm.

It prompted U.K. women’s health activist Diane Danzebrink to launch a national awareness campaign called #MakeMenopauseMatter, devoted to providing training for physicians, guidance in the workplace and curriculum in sex education.

“There’s not enough awareness, especially on the mental health issues, and we need to be talking more about it,” said University of Alberta pharmacy professor Nese Yuksel, who is on the board of the Canadian Menopause Society and a menopause clinic team member at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.

“Others think they’re having a panic attack when hot flashes and heart palpitations hit them for the first time in the middle of the night.”

Shy conversations and secret fears may not get talked about. So if there are any other sexual, marital or relationship problems they can get ignored leading to assumptions being made and misunderstandings becoming more common, which in turn can lead to arguments. What Can I Do About My Thinning Hair

Some women describe hair loss as one of the more distressing symptoms of menopause.

Hair follicles require estrogen to sustain hair growth, and fluctuating levels of this hormone during perimenopause means that most women show some degree of hair loss or thinning. How much is lossed generally depends on how much hair you had to start with. Hair may also become drier and more brittle than usual.

Eat a balanced diet and be careful using products such as bleach, henna, dye or hair relaxers. Brush your hair gently and ask your hairdresser to suggest a new style that maximizes your hair fullness. Choose a good quality shampoo and conditioner, and protect your hair from salt water and the sun.

My interest in womens health was initially sparked by the guilt I felt about the way I handled my mothers hysterectomy, which happened when she was in her early 50s .

She had her surgery when I was 15, and at the time, I was remote and unhelpful to her. My distance to her during and after her surgery was partially related to seeing for the first time in my life, this woman, who always served as a source of strength for me, become vulnerable and ask for help.

Trust me, I doand all men should listen.

As a result, we men remain largely insensitive and uninformed to the struggle of menopause.
