The very first thing you must realize is that no, you’re not losing your mind. You may be acting crazy, feeling crazy, thinking crazy thoughts — but basically, you’re OK. And no, you don’t have to force yourself to sit on the “naughty stool” until perimenopause is over.
But there are a few key things you can try that might make a huge difference. Among the most important: Reduce stress in your life.
How can this help? According to Harvard University stress expert Alice Domar, PhD, the effect of stress on hormone activity can be so profound that it is capable of inducing symptoms. Reducing stress can have the opposite effect.
In studies she conducted, Domar reports that women who participated in organized relaxation saw a 30% decrease in their hot flashes, plus a significant drop in tension, anxiety, even depression. They also reported fewer mood swings and more stable emotions overall.
The good news: Reducing even small stresses in your life — or simply setting aside some time every day to relax and unwind — can not only affect hormone balance but have a dramatic effect on your mood swings.
Another important suggestion: Whenever you do have an emotional upset, such as feeling very angry, step back, take a deep breath, and let a little time pass before you act on your dancing emotions. Chances are, when the mood swing passes — as it always does — you might not have the need to lash out at someone who probably doesn’t deserve it.

How Can Hot Flush Be Treated
Many women learn to live with menopause-related hot flushes, but if theyre really bothering you and interfering with your day-to-day life, talk to your doctor about treatments that may help.
The most effective is hormone replacement therapy which usually completely gets rid of hot flushes. But other medicines have been shown to help, including vitamin E supplements, some antidepressants, and a drug called gabapentin, which is usually used to treat seizures.
Note that doctors recommend that you dont take HRT if youve had a hormone dependent cancer such as breast or prostate cancer.

There are two main types of hormone therapy:
- Estrogen therapy : In this treatment, estrogen is taken alone. Its typically prescribed in a low dose and can be taken as a pill or patch. ET can also be given to you as a cream, vaginal ring, gel or spray. This type of treatment is used after a hysterectomy. Estrogen alone cant be used if a woman still has a uterus.
- Estrogen Progesterone/Progestin Hormone Therapy : This treatment is also called combination therapy because it uses doses of estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone is available in its natural form, or also as a progestin . This type of hormone therapy is used if you still have your uterus.

I Wasnt Expecting This
For instance, the hot flushes and night sweats didnt really bother me. The development of severe migraine that disabled me for 24 hours at least once a fortnight did. I wasnt expecting to be completely out of control of my emotions. Crying at criticism, at imagined slights, at the television for Gods sake. Or being angry and sharp, irrationally boiling with rage over really small things. Being within a hairs breadth of walking out of work, of leaving home and twelve hours later thinking What on earth, was that all about? It was about peri-menopause. No One Told Me it could be like that. No one warned me that these symptoms might be severe and intense so that I could recognize and work through those times to minimize the disruption to me, my colleagues, my family, my work. And then there were the myriad other relatively minor things forgetfulness, poor concentration, weight gain , forgetting what I wanted to say mid-sentence, aches and pains, fatigue. There really is a seemingly endless list.

Hrt And Other Medications
Your GP can also talk to you about hormone replacement therapy , which replaces oestrogen. Its the most effective treatment for hot flushes. Theyll explain the risks and benefits of taking HRT.
If you decide not to take HRT, or if its not recommended for you, there are other non-hormonal medications available. Dont suffer in silence. If hot flushes are affecting your day-to-day life, talk to your GP about what might work for you.

In health food shops I felt like I was a marketing persons dream slightly desperate, willing to try anything and unable to discriminate.

Living The Best Years Of Your Life After Menopause
I want to soothe not dismiss the fears and concerns women have around what happens after menopause. I want to reassure women that this is their time to rediscover or reinvent themselves into exactly who they want to be. There are solutions to the issues that women are worried about. And when they begin to feel better, they can truly find out who they are inside.
Ive had patients who have done amazing things things they never would have considered when their kids were young or they were climbing a professional ladder. Let me tell you about two patients I had.
The first was an accountant at a large university. After menopause, she realized shed had enough. She resigned her position, and opened a knitting cafe that also sells organic coffee and tea. Of course, this took careful planning, meditation, and discussion with family and friends. But this is just one example that shows how endless the possibilities are.
Another patient nearing her 60th birthday decided she was tired of waiting to pursue a deep spiritual quest. She packed up her house, and spent a year-long trek through Europe with her husband, exploring her ancestral heritage.
Those are just two examples of what women can do when they embrace what happens after menopause and the freedom being postmenopausal can bring. Its time to realize that these really are your prime years. Now go out and live them!
