What Causes Night Sweats Besides Menopause

But He Should Be Used To This Routine By Now

Menopause and night sweats: 6 common questions answered

Ive been having hot flashes upon waking for awhile now.

When I wake up in the morning my skin is lovely and soft.

As soon as I move, Im covered in buckets of sweat.

We both hate this morning routine, but weve learned to live with it.

This is one symptom that has refused to go away and Im supposed to be post-menopausal.

Im positive Im not the only woman on the planet who suffers from hot flashes when I wake up in the morning.

Sharons Hot Flushes Start From Her Toes Travelling As A Tremendous Heat Through Her Body

What happened with me the very first signs I had was around about a year ago when I started to experience hot flushes. And they became so bad at one stage that I would be stripping off in front of people just literally ripping my clothes off to the extent that I had to go somewhere private just to cool right the way down. If I could bottle it, Id make a fortune. Right okay, basically what happens and I cant describe them, its all of a sudden you are totally overcome by a traumatic, tremendous heat inside. Not outside, because you can feel cold outside. But a tremendous heat and it literally starts from your toes and it works right the way throughout your body and you know its travelling. Have you ever tasted Southern Comfort? Have you tasted a little Southern Comfort and as it gets down to your throat and then all of a sudden it sort of just hits your chest. And as it hits your chest, it sort of, I dont know what it does, but it warms up your body. Well you can imagine that happening, not drinking but that is a flush to me and I always used to think Oh I wish I could have them when Im working outside, when Im cold. And switch them on but you cant, theyll come anytime. How often do you get them? Oh gosh, I dont know, I mean my husband could probably pin point it more if Im with him all day long, ten, fifteen, twenty times a day.

Other Causes For Hot Flashes

When someone experiences hot flashes, a doctor can tell with a simple blood test if the problem is related to menopause or due to some other reason. Menopause usually occurs in the 50s, so when someone much younger has hot flashes, physicians will often look for additional causes. Some of the most common ones include:

  • Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism, which causes an overabundance of thyroid hormone, can increase the bodys metabolism and lead to hot flashes and sweating. While hypothyroidism is the usual culprit in these cases, non-menopausal hot flashes can also be due to thyroid cancer.
  • Food and drink, including spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, can trigger hot flashes. While the symptoms appear after a meal or a few drinks, this type of hot flash can often be stopped by eating lighter and limiting or eliminating caffeine and alcohol.
  • Medication can bring on flushing and continue as long as you are taking them changing medications often makes the condition go away.
  • Stress accompanied by a rush of adrenaline can produce a feeling of warmth like a hot flash, so if you live a stress filled life, you may set off this reaction.
  • Hormone-secreting tumors such as pancreatic tumors override the organs ability to help the body function properly and can lead to hot flashes and sweating.
  • Other conditions such as HIV and tuberculosis can produce symptoms similar to hot flashes and night sweats.

What To Expect At Your Doctors Appointment

If youve only had an episode or two of night sweats, you probably dont need to see your doctor. Environmental or lifestyle factors are likely causes. You should see your doctor if night sweats occur regularly and disrupt your sleeping habits. You should consult your doctor if you experience fevers, unexplained weight loss, or other symptoms.

When you call to make your appointment, your doctor may ask you to keep a medical diary in the coming days. You should use this diary to track your symptoms. Each time you have a night sweat, be sure to note what you were doing that day, the temperature in your bedroom, and what you ate or drank before going to bed.

At your appointment, your doctor will review your medical history and assess your symptoms. Your doctor may order blood tests to check your thyroid levels, blood sugar levels, and blood cell counts. The results can help them confirm a suspected diagnosis or help rule out an underlying condition.

If you think your night sweats may be a sign of cancer, discuss this with your doctor. Follow these tips to help you have a successful conversation with your doctor:

  • Write down a list of questions or concerns you have ahead of time and bring it to your appointment.
  • Bring a family member or friend with you for support.
  • Take notes during your appointment to help you remember your doctors recommendations.
  • If you dont understand something, ask your doctor to repeat it.
  • Ask your doctor if you can record your conversation.

What Are Other Causes For Night Sweats Besides Menopause

Are there any other possible causes for night sweats besides menopause?

The possibilities are numerous, and I will list a few of them. Night sweats, however, is not the kind of continuing symptom that you should try to deal with by self-diagnosis. Among the variety of things that can cause night sweats are a few serious conditions. It may well turn out to be nothing that warrants treatment, but the safe bet is to see a doctor.

During the visit, you can expect your doctor to ask you a series of questions, trying to ferret out the possible source of the night sweats. The doctor may conduct a thorough physical exam and may order blood tests and other types of screenings.

Most women know that night sweats are a classic symptom of menopause. But they dont always realize that these symptoms occasionally start years before menstruation ceases, or that some things, such as smoking, can bring on early menopause. So it is possible for a woman in her early forties or late thirties to have night sweats related to menopause.

Night sweats can stem from hormonal imbalances or hormonal conditions such as thyroid problems. They can be caused by fever, bacterial infection, diabetes, hypoglycemia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Other diseases which may cause night sweating include mononucleosis, AIDS, tuberculosis, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and several other kinds of cancer. Certain cancer treatments may be at fault, too.

Buyer Beware: Unproven Nonscientific Treatments For Hot Flashes

Doctor’s Recommendation For Hot Flashes, Night Sweats & Other Perimenopause & Menopause Complaints

You may have heard about black cohosh, DHEA, or soy isoflavones from friends who are using them to try to treat their hot flashes. These products are not proven to be effective, and some carry risks like liver damage.

Phytoestrogens are estrogen-like substances found in some cereals, vegetables, and legumes , and herbs. They might work in the body like a weak form of estrogen, but they have not been consistently shown to be effective in research studies, and their long-term safety is unclear.

At this time, it is unknown whether herbs or other ânaturalâ products are helpful or safe. The benefits and risks are still being studied. Always talk with your doctor before taking any herb or supplement to treat your hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms.

How To Prevent Hot Flashes From Taking Over Your Life

If you find that youre regularly struggling with hot flashes, its important to check in with a doctor to try to figure out whats going on. If lack of estrogen is the cause, your doctor will likely prescribe something to help increase the levels of the hormone in your body, like an estrogen supplement or antidepressant, Dr. Bohn says.

Other than that, you can try your best to wear light, loose clothes to bed, keep your house cool, and drink plenty of water, Dr. Wider says.

Theres only so much you can do to stop hot flashes altogether, but taking these steps should help limit how much you experienceand how severe they end up being.

Q: How Long Will I Get Hot Flashes

A: On average, you may be looking at 10-15 years of living with hot flashes. Though they are sporadic, their unpredictability is very frustrating. Lets look at what you can expect:

  • 40s: This is when most women start perimenopause. Some hot flashes and night sweats begin.
  • 46-53: In the U.S., this is the average age for menopause, which is defined as 12 straight months with no period. Hot flashes tend to be most frequent in the two years after menopause.
  • Late 50s: Most women continue to have hot flashes anywhere from 4-10 years after menopause. But most of these will decrease in frequency and severity.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Menopause

Estrogen is used by many parts of a womanâs body. As levels of estrogen decrease, you could have various symptoms. Many women experience mild symptoms that can be treated by lifestyle changes such as avoiding caffeine or carrying a portable fan. Some women donât require any treatment at all, but for others, symptoms can be more severe. The severity of symptoms varies greatly around the world and by race and ethnicity.

Here are the most common changes you might notice at midlife. Some may be part of aging rather than directly related to menopause.

Change in your period. This might be what you notice first. Your periods may no longer be regular. They may be shorter or last longer. You might bleed more or less than usual. These are all normal changes, but to make sure there isnât a problem, see your doctor if:

  • Your periods happen very close together.
  • You have heavy bleeding.
  • Your periods last more than a week.
  • Your periods resume after no bleeding for more than a year.

Bladder control. A loss of bladder control is called incontinence. You may have a sudden urge to urinate, or urine may leak during exercise, sneezing, or laughing. The first step in treating incontinence is to see a doctor. Bladder infections also can occur in midlife.

Why do I sweat after drinking alcohol or why do I have this excessive sweating after drinking alcohol? Is there a relationship between red wine and night sweats? This part is going to enlighten you more on male night sweats and alcohol connection.

It is a fact that alcohol cause night sweats in men especially in alcohol intolerance, alcohol withdrawal or and alcohol dependent patients.

Effect of alcohol on your body that could cause perspiration

When you drink alcohol, it affects your circulatory system, central nervous system and every other part of your body. It also raises the heartbeat rate and makes your blood vessels much wider. All this could trigger body perspiration.

On whether you sweat out alcohol or not, perspiration can get rid of a small amount of alcohol while most of it will be broken down in your liver, so sweating yourself cannot get rid of most of the alcohol in your body.

Alcohol withdrawal night sweats

Besides drinking alcohol, you could have nighttime sweats due to alcohol withdrawal especially to those who have developed an alcohol dependence problem.

Night Sweats And Alcohol

In some cases the night sweats alcohol causes may be a minor occurrence. You have a couple glasses of beer or wine and go to sleep before you can work it out of your system. But I worry that in many cases where this occurs there is more to the story. Alcoholism is serious and often underestimated.

Some suggest the sweating is simply your body attempting to eliminate the toxins through your pores while others belief the alcohol may be causing your hypothalamus your brains thermostat for your body to feel a little drunk in its own right. Physiologically a chain reaction of events is triggered within the body after alcohol consumption. Understanding this chain of events may make you think differently about overdoing it too often. Which Cancers Can Cause Night Sweats

While night sweats can result from a wide range of conditions, night sweats associated with cancer tend to be drenching and often are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever and unexplained weight loss.

Unlike night sweats caused by hormonal changes in menopausal or perimenopausal women, which occur sporadically, those linked to cancer tend to be persistent. Drenching night sweats that require changing clothes are more concerning than mild night sweats.

Leukemia and lymphoma are among the cancers associated with night sweats. Those associated with leukemia usually occur in conjunction with symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, or excessive bruising. Leukemia-related sweats may also result from daytime fevers. Excessive sweating is also linked to carcinoid tumors and adrenal tumors.

Night sweats can be a side effect of some cancer treatments, particularly certain types of hormone therapy commonly used to treat breast, gynecologic, and prostate cancers. Other medications, such as opioids, steroids, and antidepressants, can also cause night sweats.
