Ways To Keep Your Vagina Healthy During Menopause
There are many great things about maturing, but menopause is certainly not one of them. Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but common issues include pain during sex and vaginal dryness. The good news is, a new care regimen may help mitigate the unpleasant effects of the big change.
What happens to the vagina during menopause?
The outward signs of menopause are easy to spot hot flashes, irritability, dry skin, fatigue but theyre all caused by something we cant see: shifting hormone levels.
As our estrogen levels decrease, the vulva and the lining of the vagina can thin, become drier, and therefore less flexible. Your vagina can also become inflamed. Reduced estrogen levels can cause redness and an abnormal discharge. To prevent, or at least reduce, these and other symptoms of menopause, try some of the following natural remedies.
1. Use a natural lubricant
If you love coconut oil, youre in luck. It makes a wonderful natural lubricant. Its also antibacterial and antifungal, so it can help prevent yeast infections. Coconut oil and latex condoms dont mix, though, so be sure to use a different lubricant if condoms are a part of your routine. Coconut oil can cause condoms to break.
2. Try seed cycling
3. Have more sex
4. Moisturize things down there
5. Try eating estrogen-rich foods
- Soy products including tofu, soy milk and soy yogurt
6.;Wear cotton underwear
7. Go commando at night
Make Your Smile Shine
Practicing good oral hygiene is just as important now as when you were a kid. Aging coupled with the estrogen loss of menopause can negatively affect oral health, from receding gums to tooth sensitivity. Brush and floss daily, and schedule regular cleanings with your dentist. Also make sure you get plenty of calcium and vitamin D to prevent bone loss. That might mean talking to your doctor about whether supplements or a little sun exposure are right for you.

It May Be More Likely To Tear Or Bleed During Sex
Because the skin in the vaginal area becomes thinner and more fragile during menopause, tearing and bleeding during sex can occur, says Monique May, MD, a family and emergency room doctor based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ironically, more frequent intercourse and masturbation can make the vagina less prone to tearing since it increases blood flow and moisture to the area .
Define What Good Sex Means To You
Discovering what works for you during menopause may take some exploring and a little imagination. Trying new positions with your partner may be one way to see what you can do to get your heart pumping for all the right reasons. If theres ever been a time to make sure our needs are met, its now. Its not time to be shy.

The Insomnia And Menopause Link
Sleep disturbances are extremely prevalent and a challenging problem for midlife women, says Steven Goldstein, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University School of Medicine and president of the board of the North American Menopause Society. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, 61 percent of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women report frequent bouts of insomnia.
Dr. Goldstein says its important to figure out why your sleep is disturbed. He explains that sometimes the cause is hormonal changes related to menopause, and sometimes the problem is another age-related health condition such as incontinence or joint pain. Midlife stresses such as anxiety over work and family can also interfere with sleep. And if you werent a great sleeper to begin with, entering menopause can make insomnia even worse.

Be Wary With Hormone Replacement Therapy
Many women experiencing the negative side effects of menopause are often told to just use hormone replacement to improve symptoms.
Hormone replacement therapy can significantly reduce perimenopausal symptoms. They work by reducing the extremes sometimes experienced with the decline of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone production.
However, HRT can also make symptoms worse in the long run.
This is especially true if the other causes of hormone imbalance are NOT addressed in the first place.
Why Fake Hormones Dont Help
When you take exogenous hormones, the levels of those hormones go up in the bloodstream.
In response, your pituitary gland reduces your own natural production of that hormone.
Now, this may not be much of a problem when youre actually taking that hormone. But another problem begins to develop behind the scenes: Hormone resistance.
When we have chronically higher levels of hormones in our blood , the receptors for our hormones throughout our body get down-regulated.
Thus, the HRT hormones in our blood begin to have a lesser and lesser effect over time because our hormone receptors arent sensitive to that hormone anymore.
Long-term side effects of HRT in our blood are associated with heart disease, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer, and further adrenal imbalances.
When We Hit Puberty Our Hormonal Factories Open For Business
In our reproductive years, a complex symphony of hormonal feedback loops occurs approximately once a month.
Our brain sends a signal to our ovaries, which respond by increasing production of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone and other related hormones. We ovulate, build a uterine lining, shed it, and begin the cycle again.
Over and over, these hormonal feedback loops carefully coordinate to ensure that the uterus can support a fetus.
Hormones are pulsatile , and strongly affected by a variety of factors.
At some point, the feedback loops start to change subtly.

My Observations In Italy Show Me That The Dolce Vita Helps Italian Women Stay Leaner
Ah, La Dolce Vita, The Sweet Life! If Italian women dont count calories or look at the scale as much as French women do, they certainly enjoy a slow and sweet way of eating long meals with fresh foods together with family. Here is a view from an American women living over in Italy:
So my main observations on why Italians are generally thinner than Americans are: totally different ways of preparing food, eating fresh foods, eating organic foods, taking time to eat healthier at home, eating at a slower pace, eating and drinking in a logical order, drinking less amounts of everything, eating less sugary unnatural desserts, walking more, and having a balanced life/work schedule leading to a less stressful life.
Looking at it from the outside it seems like the Italian and French culture support an easier transition thru middle-age.
And here are my tips to help you transition over in this pre and post menopausal period.

Communicate With Your Partner
Honest conversations with your partner can help make this transition smoother and might even create a stronger bond between you, and a platform for creativity. Be open about which positions you like, what feels good and what doesnt, and how much time you need to get aroused. Menopause is a great excuse to explore new ways of being intimate.
What Are The Effects Of Low Estrogen Levels
Before we look at how low estrogen levels impact the body, its crucial to understand the role it plays. Estrogen is one of the female sex hormones, and it is vital for sexual and reproductive health and development. Both male and female bodies contain estrogen, but it is particularly;important for women.

Digestion And Bowel Function
We tend to make less of our digestive enzymes and stomach acid as we age. Our smooth muscle tissue and intestinal absorption isnt as peppy as it used to be.
This means you may notice changes in appetite, digestion, and bowel function. Heartburn, gas, and constipation might become your dinner companions more and more.
You may notice new food intolerances and sensitivities. Red wine?! Avocado? Really??
What can help:
- Good bowel habits
Low Estrogen Health Risks
Osteoporosis is when the bones become weak and brittle due to a lack of calcium. Estrogen preserves bone health by preventing calcium loss. When estrogen levels decline because of hormonal changes, it may increase the risk for fractures in the spine, hips, legs, and arms.
Women who drink a lot of alcohol, smoke, and do not exercise are at an increased risk of osteoporosis. Thin and petite women and those with a family history of osteoporosis also have a higher risk of developing this condition.
Estrogen seems to play a role in protecting the body from heart disease because it may elevate good cholesterol levels in the blood. A sharp increase in heart disease risk occurs with menopause.

Feeling Fresh During My Period
One of the challenges women face is managing the inconvenience of menstruating while keeping up with all their usual obligations. Weve compiled some helpful suggestions for keeping things fresh while youre on the rag.
There is deeply ingrained social stigma around menstruation that makes many women want to fade into the woodwork until it passes instead of carrying on with their lives. But this stigma is mostly based in myths that have long since been refuted. Knowing the facts about your period and creating a personal menstrual hygiene routine can help you keep feeling fresh throughout the month.
Your period occurs due to hormonal changes in the body. Hormones are biochemical messengers, organizing the body for its biological imperative to procreate. The ovaries release the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones cause the lining of the uterus to thicken in preparation for a fertilized egg to imbed itself in the uterine wall and begin to develop. If there is no fertilized egg and no pregnancy, the lining breaks down and is expelled as your menstrual blood. This happens each month during the fertile years of a womans life from puberty to menopause.
The average duration of a menstrual cycle is 28 days . The length of the cycle does not depend on the length of the calendar month or the phases of the Moon; it is an individual biological process that is often shorter or longer than average, generally falling within the range of 21 to 35 days.
