How Pcos Affects Fertility

HOW I GOT A FALSE POSITIVE PREGNANCY TEST!
  • Treating PCOS when trying to get pregnant. Birth control pills are one of the most effective treatments for PCOS symptoms such as weight gain and excessive hair growth. So a woman trying to get pregnant may need to temporarily stop treatment.
  • An increased risk of miscarriage. Though doctors do not fully understand why, women with PCOS are more likely to have miscarriages, this may be due to poor egg quality.
  • Insulin resistance. PCOS can lead to insulin resistance. This may affect your ability to get or stay pregnant. Women with insulin resistance may also suffer from more pregnancy complications, including gestational diabetes.

What Causes A False

The reasons for a false-positive pregnancy test range from testing too early and picking up on a pregnancy that didnt progress to using a test incorrectly and even, potentially, the effects of some medications .

Here, a look at what might be going on if you get a positive test only to find out youre not truly pregnant.

When A Woman Is Trying To Conceive A Positive Pregnancy Test Is An Incredibly Exciting Emotional Event For The 43

When a woman is trying to conceive, a positive pregnancy test is an incredibly exciting, emotional event. For the 43-year-old who is late for her period and doesnt know if it means peri-menopause or pregnancy , its the negative test that brings the smile and tears of joy. Before getting out the champagne and celebrating, can you be sure that your negative urine pregnancy test is really negative?

TheHome Laboratory

Most of us take the convenience and accuracy of home pregnancy tests for granted. Todays tests work by detecting a hormone that is produced by the future placenta and secreted in the mothers urine by 2 weeks after conception has occurred, and can easily be performed even if you flunked high school chemistry. Its hard for most women today to imagine not running off to the drugstore within moments of a missed period to pick up a $20 home kit.

But it wasnt very long ago that simply peeing on a stick wasnt an option. Prior to the 1950s, women generally just waited until the physical signs of pregnancy confirmed their suspicions. In the 1930s, the rabbit test was performed by injecting a rabbit with urine from a pregnant woman. The rabbit was then sacrificed in order to check for changes that occur when urine with high hormone levels are put into rabbit ovaries.

What Is A Chemical Pregnancy

A chemical pregnancy is a very early pregnancy loss that happens just after the embryo implants. An ultrasound wouldnt detect a fetus, but your body produces the hCG hormone so the result would be positive. Unless you took a pregnancy test, you wouldnt know you had been pregnant, as a chemical pregnancy will show very few symptoms, and you wouldnt experience like morning sickness. Many experts think that chemical pregnancies occur for similar reasons as many other miscarriages – due to chromosomal problems with the developing baby.

Watch our video to learn about what is a chemical pregnancy and why it shows up positive on your test. Early pregnancy loss is common it occurs for around 1 in 4 women but most women who lose a baby can still go onto have a healthy pregnancy.

Can A Home Pregnancy Test Give A Standard Result

With so many variables, its no wonder the home test strips cannot always provide a standard result. Since home pregnancy tests are a qualitative test, the strips can only indicate if the hormones are present or not.

However, if youre pregnant, you will see two lines. Even if the second line is very faint, this is still a positive result and means youre pregnant. A plus sign.

Can You Get Pregnant During Perimenopause

It is possible to get pregnant when youre going through perimenopause. Its less likely, but yes, you can, says Dr. Faubion.

As Dr. Salena Zanotti, MD, explains, A woman can still get pregnant if not using any contraception as she is still ovulating during this time period.

But your chances are smaller if youre a 40-something-year-old woman in perimenopause than if you were a woman in her 20s or early 30s. Fertility decreases as women age, says Dr. Zanotti, who is an OBGYN at the Cleveland Clinic. A woman over 40 has an approximately 5 percent chance of getting pregnant each cycle.

You may not be ovulating every cycle, so that lowers your pregnancy chances. Even if youre ovulating regularly, the egg quality tends to decrease as you age, plus you have hormonal changes to contend with, she adds.

Something else to keep in mind: perimenopause is time-limited, too. Perimenopause ends once you have gone 12 months without a period, says Dr. Banulis. At that point, you are in menopause, and there is no risk of becoming pregnant.

And if you dont want to risk getting pregnant during perimenopause, even with the decreased likelihood, talk to your doctor about the safest and most effective method of birth control for you, she adds.

They Have Teenage Children

Positive Pregnancy Test Accuracy, Result & What to Expect Next

18:47 EST, 21 March 2012 | Updated:

Hazel Nicolson approached what she thought was the onset of menopause not with dread, but a sense of optimism. Having raised two children, she was all too familiar with the relentless, often unappreciated drudgery of motherhood.

With her reproductive system winding down, she was looking forward to a long-awaited opportunity to relax. So it came as something of a surprise to discover that her three months of missed periods were not, in fact, due to the menopause, but an altogether unplanned pregnancy.

I was shocked and devastated, and broke down in tears when my doctor told me, says Hazel. My children were in their teens. I could see light at the end of the long tunnel of parenthood. Another baby was the last thing I wanted, and my first thought was to terminate the pregnancy.

Thought her nappy changing days were over: Hazel Nicolson, 45, had daughter Libby, three, when she already had teenage children Becky, 19, and Connor, 15

Hazel, now 45, is far from the only woman of her age to encounter an unexpected pregnancy. Recent statistics from the Department of Health revealed that the number of abortions in women over 40 has risen by a third in the past decade, with 8,000 choosing to terminate a pregnancy in 2010 alone.

Countless more went on to have their babies, as shown by a study last month which revealed that the birth rate among the over-40s has doubled over the past two decades.

Why Am I Gaining Weight During Perimenopause

The shift in hormones slows down your metabolism. Its very common for women in perimenopause to gain weight once their estrogen levels start to decline. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent weight gain during the transition to menopause.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Perimenopause is the transition to menopause. During perimenopause, you may start having menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, mood swings or vaginal dryness. Most perimenopause symptoms are manageable. But if you need help managing symptoms, medications and other treatments are available. Perimenopause ends when youve had no period for a full year. At that point, you enter menopause.

Is It Possible To Get A False Negative Pregnancy Test

Yes. It is far more likely to get a false negative pregnancy test result than a false positive pregnancy test result.

Here are the most common causes:

1. Taking your pregnancy test too early

Yes, you are desperate to find out if you’re pregnant, but if you take the test too early you could get a false negative result. Always check the packet of the pregnancy test and double check the recommended time to test. The levels of hCG may not have built up enough to be detected if you test too early.

As a result, you might get a negative result but actually be pregnant, just not pregnant enough to show up. Better Health Victoria recommends waiting until your period is at least one week late, though 2 weeks past period should confirm.

2. Not waiting long enough before checking the result

The tests take a while to work. Use a timer or a watch with seconds to make sure you wait exactly the time stated in the instruction.

3. Not following the pregnancy test instructions

Reading the information that comes with your test is important. If you don’t follow the instructions to the letter, you might find that your test gives you the wrong result. Make sure you follow them closely.

4. Diluted urine

If you have been drinking a lot of water before your test, it can affect the levels of hCG in your urine. That’s why it’s recommended to take the test during your first wee of the morning, which is usually the most concentrated.

5. Waiting until you are too pregnant!

    What Is A False

First things first: OTC pregnancy tests measure a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin in your urine thats released in spades during pregnancy especially at the beginning. As long as you are taking the test correctly , a positive result means there is HCG in your urine, explains Jaime Knopman, M.D., director of fertility preservation for CCRM New York.

But heres the thing: HCG can be present at low levels in the body even youre not pregnant and just because a test is positive for HCG doesnt mean that the pregnancy is going to progress normally. While youve likely heard that 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, the true number is likely higher because miscarriages can happen before you even know youre pregnant. Nearly 25 to 30 percent of early positive pregnancy tests do not progress normally, estimates Dr. Knopman. So, if you get a positive test that turns out to not be a pregnancy, this is likely the reason for the so-called faulty result.

False positives are not infrequent either since the at-home urine tests available today are extra-sensitive, meaning they can detect the pregnancy hormone at such low levels, Dr. Knopman says. With the old tests, you needed a higher amount of HCG in the urine, she says. In other words, years ago, a pregnancy test might not showas positive until after you miss your period, but now you can get a positive result a few days before you even miss your period.

Other Factors That Can Cause A False Positive Pregnancy Test

    False Positive Pregnancy Test

What medications can cause a false positive pregnancy test? You already know the answer, but you should also know that many other factors can also affect your pregnancy result.

    1. Using Pregnancy Test Improperly

Not using your pregnancy kit properly may result in false positives. You need to read the instructions mentioned on the kit carefully before taking a test. This is important because different test measures the levels of HCG in a different way.

    2. Not Reading Test Results in a Timely Manner

Keep in mind that pregnancy test results are effective for a short while only. If you read the result after a long time, your urine will dry, leaving evaporation lines on it. In this condition, it’s hard to recognize whether you are pregnant or not. It is therefore important to read your results within the time frame mentioned on the kit.

    3. Contaminated Urine Sample

The presence of any impurities in your urine sample may also cause a false positive pregnancy test. It could happen when the sample is contaminated with detergent, soap, or even blood. Not cleaning the cup that comes with certain pregnancy test kits can also cause contamination of the urine sample and affect your results. The presence of blood can also affect your pregnancy test and is usually an indication of bladder infections or kidney disease.

    4. Medical Conditions

    5. Chemical Pregnancy

    6. Defective Pregnancy Tests

    What Is A Molar Pregnancy

You may test positive if you have a molar pregnancy. A molar pregnancy is a very rare complication that occurs during the very early stages of fertilization that causes the fetus to develop abnormally. In a full molar pregnancy when all the genetic material from the mother is lost during fertilization there is no baby. Instead, a mole, a cluster of abnormal cells that grow into cysts, form. You can read about a molar pregnancy in more detail here. A molar pregnancy will also show up as a positive result since your body is producing hCG and is not a false positive result.

    Recent Miscarriage Or Abortion

    Show me your BFP progression!

You may continue to test positive for pregnancy following the loss of a pregnancy, either through miscarriage or abortion.

During pregnancy, hCG levels continue to rise as the placenta grows, doubling every few days and peaking at around 10 weeks. When a pregnancy ends, hCG levels begin to recede, but its a slow process.

The hormone can remain in your blood and urine for up to six weeks following the end of the pregnancy. Its possible to have a false-positive test until your hCG levels return to their prepregnancy state.

If the miscarriage was spontaneous, its also possible that not all of the pregnancy-related tissue was eliminated. This will cause hCG levels to remain elevated.

When this occurs, a minor surgical procedure called a dilation and curettage is often required to remove the tissue.

    Hot Flashes And Night Sweats

Hot flashes and night sweats are commonly associated with menopause, but they may also be early signs of pregnancy.

During a hot flash, youll feel a quick rush of heat that can cause you to sweat and your face to become red and flush. You may also sweat excessively during sleep, which can wake you up during the night and lead to fatigue.
